How to Plan a Meteor Shower Night

Find darker skies, account for the Moon, protect your night vision, and pack for several hours outdoors.

Meteor watching usually rewards comfort and patience more than expensive equipment. The biggest gains come from darker skies, a wide view, enough time for your eyes to adapt, and clothing that lets you stay outside.

Choose darkness and a wide horizon

NASA recommends getting away from city lights; even a drive 20 to 30 miles beyond a population center can materially improve the sky. Look for legal nighttime access, a broad unobstructed view, safe parking, and a forecast without clouds, smoke, or strong wind.

  • Check park hours and overnight-access rules before leaving home.
  • Avoid setting up beside headlights, security lights, or active roads.
  • Face away from the largest nearby city glow.
  • Tell someone where you are going when using a remote site.

The Moon can matter as much as the shower forecast

A bright Moon washes out faint meteors. Check its phase and rise/set times for the viewing location. A shower with a modest predicted rate under a dark moonless sky can be more satisfying than a famous shower under bright moonlight.

  • Favor the hours after the Moon sets or before it rises.
  • Use the predicted peak as a window, not a guarantee of a precise minute.
  • Give the sky at least an hour; meteor activity often arrives unevenly.

Protect your night vision

Your eyes need roughly 20 to 30 minutes to adapt to darkness. A bright phone screen or white flashlight can reset much of that progress.

  • Dim the phone and enable a red-screen or night mode before arriving.
  • Use a low-output red flashlight for walking and gear checks.
  • Lie back and scan a broad area rather than staring only at the radiant point.

Photographing the shower

NASA’s basic recipe is a tripod, a wide-angle lens, manual focus, a remote release or timer, and repeated long exposures. The process is partly a numbers game because meteors appear without warning.

  • Compose with an interesting foreground before it becomes fully dark.
  • Focus manually on a bright star or distant light and tape the focus ring if needed.
  • Use repeated exposures rather than trying to react to each meteor.
  • Keep the rear screen dim to preserve night vision.
